Pen Pal Letter

by Natasha
(Belfast)

I have had a pen-pal for a couple of years and have found writing back to her easy but now I don't know what to write about because we know everything about each other and have met up a few times. Any suggestions as to what i should write about?

Wendy's reply: There are oodles of topics you can write about... Your everyday life should have plenty of angles to discuss. Be sure to ask her questions as her replies will help you chat in the next letter. Take a whole letter and describe every inch of your favorite room in the house... whats on the wall, the color of the chairs, or bedding, the wall and carpet colors... details, details. OR Write about a day trip you took.. one day can take several pages IF you give details, what you viewed along the way, what you ate. How about a memory from childhood?

How about questions/answers to each other:

If you were attending a wedding, what would you wear from your closet? (details!)

What famous person would you like to meet and why?

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Do you really believe honesty is the best policy?

What vegetable do you enjoy

Which cartoon character do you resemble the most?

Discuss your favorite movie... or a book you just finished.

List 5 people you know. Then describe each of them in 5 words each... people you've written about over the years.

When you look out your front window, what exactly do you see? (details.. grin!)

Just think of silly questions to keep the conversation flowing...

Happy Writing! Wendy

what to write
by: Anna

Hi Natasha,

I've been writing to people for a long time too but there is always something to talk about.

Think of your letter as a conversation. As Wendy says, ask and answer questions. Sometimes it's the hardest thing to find something to talk about but once you realize it's just like sitting down with someone over a cup of tea, you'll never be bothered about what to write again.

Different seasons have different holidays and activities, vacation time and travel plans are always interesting for me.

I travel vicariously through my pen pals since I don't have the oppportunity to travel much myself. Family favourites like meals, traditions and even television shows can spark a good conversation too.

These sorts of things give you a more in depth picture of who your pal is. You may discover in the end you had much more in common than you thought!

Happy writing!
Anna
