Celebrate - Pen Pal Day!

June 1st

By Mary Kugel, WI

It's not exactly a Hallmark holiday yet - but now is the time to celebrate a special holiday for your special pen pal friends.

Several years back, famous American penpaller Rosie Tholl decided it was time to have a special day to tell pen pal friends just how meaningful their friendship was, and she picked a comfortable date with no close-by holiday and so, JUNE 1ST as PEN PAL DAY, began.

NOTE FROM WENDY -- GUESS WHAT? Chase's Events DID Recognize Pen Pal Day -- check it out here!

Rosie had been instrumental in starting state pen pal picnics, encouraging and doing newsletter publications for pen pals, and in the formation of Pen Pals United which quickly became international.

She knew early on how special pen pal friends were, and she wanted her pen pal friends to share the message too, so in her own newsletter, she decided to announce a Pen Pal Day celebration, and asked that each pen pal pick any or all of their special pen pal frends and tell them just how special their friendship was.

As long as she continued her newsletter, which is no longer available, she continued to publicize this event and it has continued to be mentioned in a few pen pal publications, but this year it would be really nice if it were carried on in an even bigger way and wider publication be made possible.

In the years since, some pals have continued to notify their pals on June 1st that it is time to celebrate their special pen pal friendship, and of course, very few pals have heard of this before and often question where the idea came from. Many being thinking, this is now a wonderful idea to be carried forward,as they make an effort to remember it the next time it comes around.

So, this is your reminder at this time to take part in PEN PAL DAY this JUNE FIRST. Start planning how to remember your pals on that day. The simplest way, of course, is a simple heartfelt message to your special pals, telling them how important they are in your life. Appropriate tuck in gifts or any small gifts are optional. I have thought that something with an angel theme is appropriate. Design your own card for this occasion. It is meant to e spontaneous and original, since you can't go to the local card shop and find something. Your own messages should reflect something known only to the two of you that makes your friendship special.

And REMEMBER -- Every Holiday had to Start Some Place!
