Michigan
by Marjorie Martin
Looking out our window in Warren, Michigan (our home when not in Florida.) We see lots of
wild animals to entertain us. A couple of years ago we saw 5 deer standing at the end of our
Neighbor's driveway. We live on a corner and the side street is a dead end, there is a creek at
the end of the side street. Besides seeing deer, we see opossum, raccoons, skunks, rabbits, even
coyotes, plus all kinds of birds.
Last summer I was at the neighbors and 7 deer came up into their yard. And another neighbor
has a tall fence protecting his garden; a deer jumped the almost 6 foot fence, to get to his
wonderful veggies. It didn't have enough room to get a running start so it could not jump the
fence again to get back out, it was stuck there until my neighbor noticed the deer and went over
and opened the gate into the garden, and the deer just walked away.
Where we live, it's like country. When growing up, Warren was the third largest city in
Michigan. It still is one of the largest cities in our state.
One day while out at the mailbox, (our mailbox is located on the dirt side road) a lady stopped
her car to talk, she said she drives by every two weeks to see if a house has gone up for sale, she
said she would just love to live on our street. We have all the amenities of a large city, and yet
our little area is like country. Once someone moves in they just don't want to move out. To my
knowledge she has not found a place to buy yet. We moved into our home, March 29, 1961,
shortly after we were married, and that will be 50 years this coming September.
We do feel very blessed to have this little space here on earth.
