Embarrassing Moment with My "Postie" (Postman)

by Susan Whittenham
(Portsmouth, England)

I live on the south coast of England, just to the north of Portsmouth. There are two postmen who cover our area. Both are very friendly chatty guys, but this is my story of an embarrassing moment with one of them.

'Cheery Chappie', as we've nicknamed this particular postman, used to make his deliveries to our house at just before 8 am when I was up and about, but still in my nightie & dressing gown when I answered the door to the postie.

One particular day I was with my husband queueing at the local post office as we had a parcel to post which needed weighing, and it was also the day the pensions were paid to old age pensioners (US = senior citizens), as many still prefer to collect their pensions in cash from the post office rather than have the money deposited into their bank account.

In comes our regular postman, 'Cheery Chappie', who at once recognised my husband & I and said in a very loud voice "Good morning, Mrs. Whittenham, I didn't recognise you with your clothes on!"

The other customers in the post office all turned to look at me, and I must admit I blushed furiously - fortunately my husband was with me in the queue and he understood what the postie meant. Nothing improper happened between me and the postie, but I'm not so sure the other customers realised this!

Once Mike and I got back home afterwards, I did have a good laugh about the incident.

Wendy's Two Cents: Ooooh-La-La, Susan! This is a bit "frisky" for my friendly website... grin! I love your funny story which will be printed in the January 2009 issue of Inky Trail News! Loved the "Cheery Chappie" and "postie" both words we don't hear in the USA! Cool! Thank you!
