Boring pen pals

If postage cost is a concern, send a short message on a post card. Post cards will go up to 29 cents soon but, it's still cheaper than sending a letter. You can mention that post cards are the way to go!

The limited writing area will keep topics short and you get to look at an interesting picture on the opposite side. To personalize it you/they can even make your own post cards.

But, no matter how you say it, and as nice as you can be, getting a dear John letter from a pen pal may still evoke some hurt feelings. Sorry.

You know that song: You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need.

Boring pen pals

I agree!!! I would feel hurt, even angry, if one of my pen pals said they didn't want to write to me because I was b-o-r-i-n-g. I may not want to ever write another letter again. It's kinda like the teacher who only see faults or critics in a negative manner their students artistic endeavors. The students soon becomes de-motivated to create, and usually stops experimenting with art all together.

The post card suggestion is excellent! Send a boring pen pal a post card with 2 or 3 open ended questions to answer at first. Maybe something like:

Describe the flavors of your most favorite foods.

How would you go about organizing your day?

When you can't leave the house, what kind of things run through your mind?

What is your favorite poem or short story about?

Have them make a Top 10 List of reasons why they pen pal.

After a couple of letters or post cards, compare the older ones with the newer ones and see if their writing is becoming a bit more interesting. Letters starting off with the weather may expand to:

"The weather is still warm here but, yesterday I wore a sweater to school and must have sweated out 80 gallons of water. It was pouring from every single sweat gland on my body. Slosh, slosh, slosh!!!"

Maybe, just maybe, by encouraging a friend to keep writing, it will make you a better writer and become a long time pen pal to someone who really needs a friend. Hang in there!
